NewsMercury Records Relaunches Under IDJMercury Records, once home to bands like the Cardigans and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, has relaunched as a new division of Island Def Jam (IDJ) Music Group with former Epic Vice President Of A&R David Massey as president. Massey is looking forward to breathing "new life" into the label, which ceased operation in 1999 when PolyGram and Seagram merged. However, Mercury has remained a fully functional label in the UK, home to Shiny Toy Guns and Fall Out Boy's international distribution. According to a statement released today, Massey will oversee all operations of the US hub of the label, and report directly to IDJ Chairman L.A. Reid. "Even more than David's proven leadership and success as an executive in our business is the track record of trust and inspiration he has won from the artists he's worked with over the years," said Reid via the release. "This all-important quality makes him the perfect choice to pilot Mercury through its latest incarnation as a new cornerstone in the IDJ family. We welcome him to the senior management team." Massey previously signed and developed a wide variety of artists ranging from Good Charlotte to Phantom Planet to Cyndi Lauper. There is no confirmation as to which artists will call Mercury their home, or how many releases are slated for this year. Massey will assume his new post on April 16. Black Crowes, Devendra tell American stories in song The Black Crowes, Devendra Banhart and Martha Wainwright are among the artists contributing to a three-disc compilation that tells stories of American history through song. The idea was originally proposed by US Attorney General Janet Reno, and has taken shape in the form of 'Song Of America', which is due out in the US on September 18. The songs on the compilation tell stories of Native Americans, the arrival of European immigrants, the American Revolution, the Civil War and two world wars, as well as major events leading up to the present-day. Also contributing to the compilation are John Mellencamp, Blind Boys of Alabama and Andrew Bird. |
